Quick answer

Ophthalmology marketing is the work of being findable and credible at the moment a patient decides to seek care. Sell the surgeon, not the laser. That is what this hub covers, across 280 guides.

Key takeaways

  • Three distinct patients, and conflating them is the standard agency error. The refractive patient is 28 to 45, researching LASIK or SMILE for six to eighteen months, price-sensitive but not price-led, and reading reviews obsessively.
  • Refractive is the most commercially aggressive corner of eye care. National LASIK chains, PE-backed ophthalmology platforms and laser manufacturers all bid the same terms, and paid CPCs are high enough that an independent surgeon cannot win on budget.
  • Sell the surgeon, not the laser.
  • Depth is the mechanism. A twelve-page site answers twelve questions; the entry build is 500-plus pages, and a practice on that tier owns roughly 865 indexed pages by the end of year one.
  • Price advertising is the live risk.

01 — OverviewHow ophthalmology patients actually find care

Three distinct patients, and conflating them is the standard agency error. The refractive patient is 28 to 45, researching LASIK or SMILE for six to eighteen months, price-sensitive but not price-led, and reading reviews obsessively. This pillar sits under our specialties index, which covers all thirty-two.

Ophthalmology marketing is the practice of making a ophthalmology practice findable and credible at the moment a patient decides to seek care, by publishing specific answers about conditions, access, cost and coverage rather than general claims about quality.

What they are actually checking

Their searches are commercial from the first query: “LASIK cost,” “am I a candidate for LASIK,” “LASIK vs ICL.” The cataract patient is 65-plus, usually sent by an optometrist, and searching to validate a referral rather than to choose from scratch: “cataract surgery recovery,” “premium lens options,” “is cataract surgery covered by Medicare.” Their adult child often runs the search. The medical retina, glaucoma and cornea patient barely searches at all. They are referred, they are frightened, and they look up the surgeon’s name to confirm the referral was sound.

Why that changes what the site has to do

Sell the surgeon, not the laser. Every competitor lists the same platform names. HM’s angle is that a patient choosing elective eye surgery is choosing who operates, and the site should make that person unmistakable.

02 — SearchWhat winning ophthalmology search actually requires

The highest-intent queries in this specialty are frequently the ones national players have decided not to fight for. A directory ranks for the head term in every metro at once. It does not rank for the condition-plus-city-plus-payer query, because that page has to be written by somebody who knows the answer. That is the opening, and it is a labour one rather than a clever one.

The query set this specialty is actually built on

These are the queries that decide the build. Read the right-hand column as the work order: each one names a page that has to exist before the query can be won.

QueryIntentThe page it needs

cataract surgery cityCommercialProcedure page

8 priority queries for ophthalmology — 5 commercial, 2 transactional, 1 informational. Bracketed terms are variables: one page per value, which is where the page count comes from. Keywords are intent-matched from the specialty register and are not volume-validated; confirm in a keyword tool before build.

Depth is a topical authority play that happens to produce volume

A twelve-page site can answer twelve questions, rank for twelve and be cited twelve times. A five-hundred-page site answers five hundred, and each new page strengthens the topical authority of every page already there. The entry tier is 500-plus pages, scaling to 10,000, and there is nothing below it. On top of the foundation, seven blogs a week produces more than 365 indexed pages a year.

WebFX analysed 130,070 healthcare queries in July 2025 and found that 51 percent trigger AI Overviews, roughly double the cross-industry rate, rising to 66.9 percent for informational queries. Google’s own documentation states that for topics affecting health, its systems give more weight to content aligned with strong E-E-A-T signals, and that of the four components, trust matters most. Sourced, attributed, reviewed content gets cited. The rest gets summarised without a link.

What we report is booked appointments, not rank. Rankings move in 3–4 months, inquiries grow in 6–12 months, and the strongest returns arrive in 12–18 months. Those are the timelines, and they do not improve when a prospect asks.

03 — Competitive realityWho holds the first screen in ophthalmology

Refractive is the most commercially aggressive corner of eye care. National LASIK chains, PE-backed ophthalmology platforms and laser manufacturers all bid the same terms, and paid CPCs are high enough that an independent surgeon cannot win on budget.

Problem

The problem

National LASIK chains, PE-backed ophthalmology platforms and laser manufacturers all bid the same terms, and paid CPCs are high enough that an independent surgeon cannot win on budget. Cataract terms are dominated by hospital systems and by the same PE platforms rolling up regional practices.

Solution

The solution

Page headline: “The surgeon who does your LASIK should be the person who evaluates you for it.” For cataract, write to the referral-validation moment: confirm the optometrist made a sound call, explain the lens choice in plain terms, and give the adult child something to read.

Resolution

The resolution

The resolution is architectural rather than clever. Three pages carry most of the intent in ophthalmology: a procedure page for “LASIK [city]”, a quiz / blog for “am i a candidate for LASIK”, and a procedure page for “cataract surgery [city]”. Build those three before anything else is amplified.

The move is not to outrank the directory on its own term

Competing head-on for the head term against a domain with two decades of authority is an expensive way to lose slowly. The move is to stop renting visibility from it. Every condition page, payer page and access page the practice publishes is a query the directory is not positioned to answer, and a patient who arrives through one of those pages already knows the wait, the cost and the process, which shortens the call and raises the show rate.

Thirty minutes with Steven. A diagnosis of your ophthalmology market, not a pitch.

04 — Local searchWhat proximity does in ophthalmology

For a meaningful share of patients in this specialty the Google Business Profile is the whole experience; they never reach the website. That means categories and services filled in completely, hours that are accurate including the ones where nobody answers, appointment links that work on a phone, and a review profile with enough recent volume to read as a functioning practice.

Review generation has a hard legal boundary

We generate 4 to 8 new Google reviews per month at minimum and build toward a 50-plus review profile. None of that involves buying, writing, incentivising, or gating solicitation by expected rating. All four are prohibited under the FTC Rule on Consumer Reviews and Testimonials, 16 CFR Part 465, which took effect on October 21, 2024 and carries civil penalty authority. Asking every patient, systematically, is lawful and produces a more durable profile anyway. Local SEO moves in 2 to 4 months, faster than organic, and it is usually where an engagement shows its first measurable change.

05 — The first 90 daysWhat the build sequence looks like

Marketing timelines in this category are usually vague because vagueness is safer. Here is the published sequence, and it is the same one every engagement runs.

Days 1–30

Brand book, then a workable site

The Brand Intelligence Book and brand guide are delivered in week one, before anything is designed or written. A workable site goes live in weeks two to three, sized to the engagement. Content and Google Business Profile work start in week one in parallel.

Days 31–60

Press and local targeting

The first press release goes out in week five. Local targeting begins in weeks five to six, at roughly 25 pages per city-and-service target for every $1,000 per month of spend. Publishing runs at seven posts a week throughout.

Days 61–90

Depth, and the first movement

Page depth compounds and local signals begin to register. Local SEO moves in 2 to 4 months and organic rankings in 3 to 4, so this is the window where the first measurable change usually appears. Inquiries follow at 6 to 12 months.

What has to be true on the practice’s side

We do not take on a practice whose intake cannot handle more volume. If the phone goes unanswered at lunch, marketing spend becomes a leak, and the honest move is to say so before the contract, fix intake first, and start the engagement in month two. That costs one month of revenue and saves the relationship.

06 — Provider pages and complianceWhat this specialty is allowed to say

A provider page is frequently the conversion page, because the patient is deciding about a specific person rather than a practice. The entity side is structural: a named clinician with credentials, board certification, licensure states, training, and a consistent identity across the site, the profile and every citation. Inconsistency there is not cosmetic, because the systems assembling AI answers are matching entities, and a clinician who appears three different ways is three weak entities rather than one strong one.

The rules that bite in ophthalmology. Price advertising is the live risk. California BPC 651(c) requires exact pricing and prohibits “as low as,” “and up,” and lowest-price claims, which makes most national LASIK ad copy unusable here. Outcome claims about vision results need peer-reviewed support under 651(b)(7), superiority claims need substantiation under 651(b)(6), and “board certified” requires the full ABO board name under 651(h)(5)(C).

Ophthalmology practice photography
Illustrating the credentials and consistency a hesitant patient checks.

Those boundaries are design constraints here rather than a legal review at the end. A page written around them reads the same to a patient and survives a complaint; a page written into them has to be rebuilt after one.

07 — The angleWhat we say, and why it works in this specialty

Sell the surgeon, not the laser. Every competitor lists the same platform names. HM’s angle is that a patient choosing elective eye surgery is choosing who operates, and the site should make that person unmistakable.

Page headline: “The surgeon who does your LASIK should be the person who evaluates you for it.” For cataract, write to the referral-validation moment: confirm the optometrist made a sound call, explain the lens choice in plain terms, and give the adult child something to read. Never lead with price. Under California rules you cannot advertise it the way the chains do anyway.

Related work: psychiatry and psychology share parts of this pattern and differ on payer mix and search language.

08 — PricingWhat this costs, and why there is no band

Engagements start at $2,000 per month. That floor is published. There is no band above it, and the honest reason is that a band would be a fiction.

What a ophthalmology practice pays is set by how contested its market is, how large it is, and how much has to be built before anything can be amplified. A practice in a saturated metro needs more work to reach the same position than one in an open market, and pricing them identically would mean underserving the first or overcharging the second. The number for a specific practice is given on the call rather than after three meetings.

No exclusivity, and the reason

We do not offer market exclusivity. An exclusivity promise is a promise to turn away a practice that needs the work, and it prices the second-best practice in a zip code out of good marketing entirely. What we build instead is an asset a competitor cannot copy, because it is five hundred pages deep in the practice’s voice with its clinicians’ names on it.

The bottom line

Ophthalmology is won on the queries a directory cannot answer and a national brand is not positioned to claim. That takes page depth rather than cleverness. The next step is thirty minutes to find out where your visibility is going instead.

Frequently asked questions

How long before ophthalmology marketing produces new patients?

Rankings move in 3 to 4 months, inquiries grow in 6 to 12 months, and the strongest returns arrive in 12 to 18 months. Local search moves faster, typically in 2 to 4 months, which is why an engagement usually shows its first measurable change in the Map Pack rather than in organic traffic. Those are the timelines we publish and they do not improve when a prospect asks. Anything faster is either paid media, which has its own economics and stops when the spend stops, or a promise nobody can substantiate. The compounding is the point: page 300 makes page 12 rank better.

What does ophthalmology marketing cost?

Engagements start at $2,000 per month and we publish that floor. There is no band above it because a band would be misleading. Cost is driven by how contested the market is, how large the practice is, and how much has to be built before anything can be amplified. A solo practice in an open market and a multi-provider group in a saturated metro need different amounts of work to reach the same position, and quoting them the same range would mean underserving one of them. Local page production runs at roughly 25 pages per city-and-service target for every $1,000 per month of spend.

What are the compliance limits in ophthalmology specifically?

Price advertising is the live risk. California BPC 651(c) requires exact pricing and prohibits “as low as,” “and up,” and lowest-price claims, which makes most national LASIK ad copy unusable here. Outcome claims about vision results need peer-reviewed support under 651(b)(7), superiority claims need substantiation under 651(b)(6), and “board certified” requires the full ABO board name under 651(h)(5)(C). Those rules shape the copy from the first draft rather than being applied as a review at the end, which is the difference between a page that reads naturally and one that has had its claims cut out of it. We will also tell you on the first call where your clinical scope is wider than your advertising path, because finding that out after an account suspension is expensive and slow to reverse.

Who actually holds the first screen in this specialty?

Refractive is the most commercially aggressive corner of eye care. National LASIK chains, PE-backed ophthalmology platforms and laser manufacturers all bid the same terms, and paid CPCs are high enough that an independent surgeon cannot win on budget. Cataract terms are dominated by hospital systems and by the same PE platforms rolling up regional practices. Directories and Medicare-adjacent lead sellers occupy the middle. The opening for an independent is surgeon-specific: named volume, named technology, named optometric co-management network. Refractive decisions are made on trust in one person, and a chain cannot put a face on it the way a solo surgeon can.

Why is the entry build 500 pages instead of a smaller site?

Because depth is the mechanism rather than the output. A twelve-page site can answer twelve questions, rank for twelve and be cited twelve times. Five hundred pages answers five hundred, and each page strengthens the topical authority of every page already there. One engagement demonstrates it from both directions: a psychiatry practice spent the first half of 2026 on a 100-page site, watched traffic flatten and then decline, rebuilt past 500 pages in July, and posted its two strongest months immediately after, moving from 428 monthly active users in January to 3,400 in August. There is no tier below 500 pages.

What happens to our pages if we stop working with you?

They stay with the practice. The site is the only asset in a marketing programme that the practice owns outright, that appreciates, and that cannot be removed by an algorithm change, a platform policy or a lapsed subscription. That is the central argument for building depth into a site the practice controls rather than renting visibility from a directory or a platform subscription. It is worth asking any agency this question directly and listening for whether the answer involves a proprietary platform, a template licence, or content that lives on infrastructure you do not control.

How we reviewed this page

Every statistic on this page carries its source at the point of use, and each source is listed below. Regulatory statements are cited to the Federal Trade Commission, the Department of Health and Human Services, and state licensing codes rather than to secondary summaries. The ophthalmology market description is drawn from Healthcare Marketing’s own specialty register, which is researched per specialty and revised on the same cadence as this page. Performance figures are reported with their baseline and timeframe attached, and any figure without both is not published here.

Written and reviewed by Steven Lockhart, founder of Healthcare Marketing, who brings 25-plus years of marketing experience, 15-plus of it healthcare-exclusive. Healthcare Marketing is a marketing agency and does not employ clinicians, so nothing on this page is presented as clinical review. It is reviewed quarterly, and within 14 days of any Google core update or advertising-platform policy change that contradicts it.
